Dark and Quiet Skies

Dark and Quiet Skies, a sculptural installation exploring the impact of Starlink satellites and the consequences of it's light pollution in the night's sky. Drawing from orbital data every 4'33" of a random Starlink satellite, the work composes a new song based on the satellite's current orbit. This song, a series of dissonant rhythmic tones, creates a sound reminiscent of dialup Internet, calling back to the function of the satellite network. The form of the installation, a mobile, evokes mobiles of the solar system often sold as children's toys, but instead of stars and planets the silhouettes of Starlink satellites are seen. With these satellites light pollution often covering astronomer's views of the nights sky, possibly blocking or corrupting important science, a critical eye needs to be taken to their necessity verses other earthbound, decentralized, and anticapitalist solutions, like mesh networks.
